China-U.S. Innovation Race is Topic of May 2nd Discussion; ex-USPTO Director Iancu to Speak

The U.S. and China compete in many vital areas. Intellectual property, which affects everything from semiconductors to luxury goods, is among the most contested. 

Not only has China the leading infringer of U.S. patents and trade secrets, it remains the largest source of counterfeit U.S. or fake goods, those protected under trademark law.

On May 2nd, a panel moderated by Adam Mossoff, an intellectual property expert and innovation historian; U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Director and Undersecretary of Commerce, 2017-2021, Andrei Iancu; MassBio CEO Kendalle Burlin-O’Connell; and Patrick Kilbride Senior Vice President of the Global Innovation Policy Center in Washington, will gather in Boston to discuss the China-U.S. innovation race and what the U.S. needs to do to win it.

Professor Mossoff, who is a fellow at the Hudson Institute and a CIPU board member, suggests that not only is economic supremacy at stake, but the future of innovation in the U.S. and elsewhere.

“How do we turn and idea in the lab or garage in a real world product or service that everyone can use and enjoy,” says Mossoff who appears in the documentary Innovation Race. “That’s the key of the patent system; that’s what patents as property rights do.”
