Industry Lines are Blurring When it Comes to Sources of Innovation and rights, especially in AI

The U.S. and the Americas continue to be the leading source in key areas of innovation such as pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, information technologies and medical products. But focus in areas like AI is changing the look of some industries.

It is becoming clear that IT is no longer the source of all things tech.

The Top 100 Global Innovators report was released by Lexis/Nexis as part of the Innovation Momentum 2025: The Global Top 100. The research focuses in part on the blurring inventive boundaries between traditional stand-alone industries and technologies. Innovations like digitization, wireless connectivity, and mobile devices have started to erase boundaries that once seemed clear.

The data illustrates the growing overlap in areas like autonomous and electric vehicles, 5G technologies, and biotechnology/pharma. Innovation in those industries does not necessarily come from the expected sources.

“Researchers have been exploring machine learning algorithms, neural networks, and cognitive computing for decades,” states Innovation Momentum 2025, “leading to the sophisticated AI applications we see today. This long-standing interest is reflected in the steady stream of AI-related patent filings, underscoring the field’s evolution and the continuous drive for innovation.”

AI patents are no longer relegated to information technology industries.

The U.S. has 47 companies in the Lexis/Nexis Global 100 Top Innovators list. Other leading nations include Germany (12), China (7), Japan (5), and Korea (7).

While the report focused on corporate patent owners, a parallel analysis was done of academic and public research innovators to recognize their achievements as well.

Among those institutions, Broad Institute, Fraunhofer, Harvard, MIT, Stanford University, University of California, and Zhejiang University were recognized for demonstrating exceptional Innovation Momentum, while developing relevant and high-quality patent portfolios.
