‘Fakes’ cost the EU more than 60 billion EUR annually; smaller nations suffer most

Counterfeit goods cost the UK, Italy and Germany the most lost revenue in the EU. However, Romania, Bulgaria and Lithuania are the hardest hit nations in terms of direct economic impact.

Romania’s direct infringement economic cost, as a percentage of sales is 22.5%. 60 billion EUR annually are lost to fakes, according to a EUIPO study as reported in Euroativ.com.

Asia is Primary Source

80% of all EU counterfeit goods seized originated in China and Hong Kong, according to the research.  About two-thirds of the goods were transported by mail.
